My brother and I made a web app to kill Facebook events

It's called YaHerd and I had a lot of fun designing and coding the CSS for it, and I'd love to hear what you think about the UI, user experience, and overall design.

Over the last year or two a bunch of our friends have left Facebook for privacy reasons, and organizing them for events and get-togethers was becoming a real hassle over email and text. So my brother and I decided to make a simple no-accounts-necessary web app that lets you pick a time and place and it creates a URL you can share with people to keep everyone up-to-date.

I wanted to escape the React monoculture and my brother had heard great things about Vue, so we combined that with Firebase which got us started really quickly. We are using the Vue CLI and our own custom rolled component and animation library we’re really proud of. Vue’s transition system is awesome to work with and we built a whole customizable animation system we plan on open sourcing on top of it.

Coming up with the branding and name was a lot of fun, although finding a name that also has a decent URL is quite difficult. Another big challenge in designing YaHerd was making a UI and logo that could be rethemed in 5 different colors.

We’re happy to answer any questions about how we made YaHerd and we hope you like it enough to use it to organize your friends too!

Nice idea! - Events are the only reason I have a facebook account and would love to get rid of it. A few ideas for the landing page: · A different colour in your screenshots and your "create event" button would make them stand out more. Right now it has a sepia filter look going on. · The create even button gets a little lost on the background, try giving it a background spanning the viewport so it looks more like a toolbar, or have it static above where your donate box is now. · Nice balloon type treatment, I think you could make this a bit larger. Some nice details would be to stagger some of the letters on the vertical axis and add some confetti in the background for colour.

This is great feedback, thank you! I have definitely heard similar things about the Create Event button. Not sure what you mean by a "Different Color in your Screenshots"

:) In your app screens using a ui colour that is not used throughout the page will help them stand out more. Another option could be to keep the monochrome palette but use softer versions of the colour your background.

Literally needed exactly this in my life. My friends are always upset that I don’t have FB. Now I’ll have them test this and get back to you with feedback. Two gold stars and a cookie for you! 🌟🌟🍪

Thanks Keith! Facebook is such a dead-weight now, so much junk in it I don't need. Looking forward to hearing what you think of YaHerd and any feedback you might have!

Thanks! You don't need an account to make events and use the app. If you make an event without an account it will send you a unique private link to whatever email you enter so you can access your event as the creator again. We are even thinking about ways to let you do that without entering any email (you would have to save the unique link yourself).
